5 Page Designs assignment – IMR

For Intro to Media and Reporting

For all of your designs, remember the following:

– Does your page design have at least 50 percent photos/art/images?

– Does your page design have dominant art (DOM)?

– Does you page use story telling devices?

– Does all of your headlines and cutlines follow all style guidelines?

– Does your page design follow the dollar bill test?

What to look for: In your re-creation pages, make sure you are being as exact as possible so that your pages mirror the originals.

For pages you create, try different elements of design. Think of using color, rotating items and objects, main headlines and secondary headlines, typing on a path, text wrapping (for both square and rounded objects) and experiment with other design elements.

You can work on the following 5 designs in the order of your choice. You will use Adobe InDesign for your designs.

DESIGN 1 – Theme page

Design a THEME page based on the interest of your choice – think of a university you like, vacation destination, book or movie, musical artist, team, anything school appropriate.

You are going to design a TABLOID page for this design. Page must be in the 4-6 column range.

Body font (content in stories) should be no larger than 11 pt.

For you content, you can find images online. This includes stories, photos and graphics.

Your page must have a DOM (dominant image).

DESIGN 2 – Magazine re-creation page

Recreate a magazine page of the magazine of your choice. Your page must be approved in advance by Mr. Wofford.

You are going to design a TABLOID page for this design.

Body font (content in stories) should be no larger than 11 pt.

Try to find similar photos and text (you do not have to have the exact photos or the exact story. For example, if you page has a photo of LeBron James, find a similar photo online of LeBron to use. Same with the story).

You want your page to be as much of a mirror image of the original as possible.

You will turn in the original magazine page you are copying either by hard copy or by scanning the page and printing the scan.

Design 3 – Newspaper re-creation page

Recreate the front page of a major daily newspaper found at Newseum.org. Your page must be approved in advance by Mr. Wofford.

You are going to design a TABLOID page for this design. Page must be in the 4-6 column range.

Body font (content in stories) should be no larger than 11 pt.

Remember, each day the pages refresh so be sure to either download the front page or take a screen shot (command-shift-4 and drag) of your front page so that you can continue what you started the following day.

Try to find similar photos and text (you do not have to have the exact photos or the exact story. For example, if you page has a photo of LeBron James, find a similar photo online of LeBron to use. Same with the story).

You want your page to be as much of a mirror image of the original as possible.

Each page must have the following:

– Flag

– Rail

– DOM

– Teasers

– Index

Design 4 – Intro to Media/Reporting newspaper page

Using items posted to your WordPress this year, build a page of your best content resembling a Page 1 of a typically daily newspaper found on Newseum.org.

You are going to design a TABLOID page for this design. Page must be in the 4-6 column range.

Body font (content in stories) should be no larger than 11 pt.

For content, you will use your (must be yours, cannot use classmates work) photos and stories posted throughout the school year on your WordPress.

Your page must include all of the following:

– Flag (you can name your publication)

– Rail

– DOM

– teasers (at least three)

– Index (have this be fictional page numbers for other stories you have done during the year that would be inside your issue)

Design 5 – Double-Truck in-depth page

Choose a issue-related topic of your choice – think of issues which connect to you such as standardized testing (STAAR/EOC, increasing tuition prices, social issues such as bullying and peer pressure, Sidekick centerspread-type content).

You are going to design a LANDSCAPE/DOUBLE-TRUCK spread for this design.

Body font (content in stories) should be no larger than 11 pt.

For you content, you can find images online. This includes stories, photos and graphics.

Your page must have a DOM (dominant image).

DEADLINE: All 5 pages must be posted to your WordPress by the end of class on Wednesday, May 28. Your pages must be posted as PDFs to receive credit. You cannot post the InDesign file to you site as you must make the completed page a PDF.

NOTE: Make sure you cite all of your work either on your page or in your WordPress post. Any stories or photos you utilize which do not belong to you, you must specifically cite the author/photographer, publication/newspaper and date of publication.
